“I am the Vine are the branches, if you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit, apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:51,
Aside from Christ, we are nothing. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. Aside and apart from seeking and serving God’s purpose, the truth is that in the greater scheme of things, no other purpose matters; and we can only truly serve His purpose, if we remain in Him and He remains in us.
Many claim to abide in Christ but eventually their “fruits” or their actions reveals otherwise. Our actions and our life are always a reflection of what lies deeply in our heart. They reveal the core focus of our lives and where our ultimate allegiance lies – Christ or the world.
Though a person may pretend for a while, fool those around them and even themselves, sooner or later, we are all exposed for what we truly are – those who truly abide in Christ or not, those who gather with Him or scatter and those who are for him or against…
The Bible states in Romans 7:18, “And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.” Since no good exist within us and since our default nature is to sin and rebel against God, then the only hope any of us have in rising above our sinful nature and living a life pleasing to God is Christ – not our will, not our efforts and not our ‘good work’s but Christ.
Meaning that if we remain in Christ, continually seek Him and make him front and centre of our lives, then the evidence of his presence and influence in our lives will be obvious. Meaning that if we are obedient to his words and his ways, and not to the influences of this world, then his power will be evident in our lives – power over sin, power over the influences of the world and power over principalities that rule this world.
Not only does Christ remind us that aside from him we can do nothing, He also states affirmatively in John 14: 6 that he alone is the way the truth and the life.
He’s not only the life that sustains every aspect of creation and all that is contained within it, He brings eternal life where the bondage of sin has brought spiritual death and He brings life to the eyes of the soul where sin has brought spiritual blindness.
But we can only experience the life Christ brings when we accept him as Saviour and King, Him as the only way and follow him alone as the truth. There is the way of the world and there is the way of Christ. There is the truth of the world and there is the truth of Christ. One leads to eternal life, the other leads to eternal separation from God.
Within Him there is freedom, apart from Him there is bondage. Within Him, there is peace apart from Him, there is worry. Within Him there is order apart from Him, there is confusion. Within Him there is light and apart from Him, only darkness. Within Him is eternal life and without Him is eternal death.
He freely offers His love, forgiveness and restoration to all those who come to Him in repentance. None will He return away.
Right now we have that opportunity. Tomorrow we might not.
